PROGRAM NOTES

Deadly Pursuit is inspired by the music found in modern film score music as well as
Japanese mediums such as Anime and J-pop. Built loosely around the “pop” song form
of verse, pre-chorus, chorus, Deadly Pursuit aims to bridge the gap between the
concert world and modern popular music.

The piece starts with an intense and accented rhythmic figure, indicating the start of the “pursuit” and the subsequent danger. The piece transitions into a melodic figure in the Violin I while maintaining the severity of the accented rhythms, ultimately reaching the “chorus” of the piece. After
a climactic build-up in the music (possibly hinting at the end of the chase), a slow and
lyrical melody appears, serving as a brief moment of reflection. The pursuit kicks back
in full force, with the piece ultimately ending on a higher note than previously.
